Background
............................................................................................................................................................................
In 2007, Founder/Executive Director - Philanthropist, Mary G. Johnson, an American,
established her residence between the US and Accra, Ghana. On witnessing the
extreme poverty situations that plague the children in Accra, Mary, better known
as "Grandma" commenced an informal, periodical, "feeding the children and destitute
families of Accra program". In 2008 this program was formalized as the
H.E.L.P. FEED THE CHILDREN FOUNDATION, a not-for-profit, non-governmental, community
organization both in Ghana and the US.
The Landscape
..............................................................................................................................................................................
At present H.E.L.P. FEED THE CHILDREN FOUNDATION provides food for over four hundred
children, including destitute families and on special occasions have supported families with
tuition fees. In the absence of designated feeding facility, the Ghana State Park and
"Meals on Wheels" - where possible - will be used. We also have established a library for children
and adult to utilize whether for pleasure reading or school assignment. Currently, this is done
using Mary's personal funds and social security benefits.
Your contributions will help change the landscape and facilitate plans that are afoot to have a center built
in the future. It is envisioned that this center will double as a well-needed community center.
The Children
...............................................................................................................................................................................................
As the city of Accra develops and expands there is also a need for expanding the social safety net for the
less fortunate children living there. H.E.L.P. FEED THE CHILDREN FOUNDATION, is helping to bridge the
gap in delivering these services by identifying the needy children in all areas of Accra and providing them
with much-needed nourishment. Most of the children are from homes where their parents or care-givers are
unable to feed and care for them adequately. The hardships include:
- Inadequate access to employment opportunities
- Inadequate physical access such as land and capital and minimal access to credit.
- Inadequate access to markets for goods and services that they can sell
In addition to the compelling issue of hunger two future initiatives of H.E.L.P. FEED THE CHILDREN
FOUNDATION will be housing and healthcare. It is the hope of the FOUNDATION that these services will
be extended to the families of these children also.
